    The Data Is Irrefutable

RICHMOND, Va. — After suffering 847 bloody noses and losing 23 pairs of glasses in the name of academic research, Dr. Matt Davidson has published the most comprehensive study of mosh pit linguistics ever conducted.

“The data is irrefutable,” said Davidson, adjusting his 24th pair of glasses while showing off a fresh black eye from last night’s research at a basement show. “Whether you’re at a crusty punk dive in Portland or a screamo warehouse in Richmond, these conversational patterns remain remarkably consistent.”

    The Universal Mosh Pit Vocabulary:

    • “This venue smells like cat piss” — the highest compliment a room can receive
    • “Wait, what band is this?” — from someone whose commitment to moshing has never required knowing the band
    • “I drove four hours for this” — explains everything about this person’s behavior for the rest of the night
    • “My mom is picking me up at 10:30” — makes everyone feel 47
    • “Sorry!” — shouted by the same guy, to the same person, for the fourth time
    • “I lost my shoe!” — followed by the entire pit stopping to help find one beaten-up Vans among the chaos
    • “This isn’t even my blood!” — concerning statement from someone who seems surprisingly cheerful about it
    • “I LOVE YOU GUYS!” — directed at eight people whose names you will never know
    • “Are you okay?” / “YEAH!” — exchanged immediately after someone gets absolutely folded

Davidson’s research, funded by a grant from the Saul M. Bernstein Foundation for Extremely Temporary Hearing Loss, took nearly a decade to complete, during which Davidson estimates he consumed 3,000 cans of PBR and slept on 400 different couches, approximately 60 of which he was invited to.

“The most remarkable finding was the consistency across subgenres,” Davidson noted. “Whether it’s a grindcore show in a VFW hall or an emo revival show in someone’s living room, these phrases appear with mathematical precision.”

However, Davidson’s methods have drawn scrutiny. The study has been criticized by some academics who question his methodology, particularly his decision to conduct research while heavily intoxicated at 60% of the shows. Davidson dismissed the criticism, noting that “getting blackout drunk isn’t a flaw in my methodology — it’s a feature.”

Davidson’s follow-up study has been fully funded by Pabst Blue Ribbon. This is the first time Pabst Blue Ribbon has funded academic research. Davidson is hopeful it will not be the last.
