I was recently reading through the archive of the famous horror anthology comic series Startling Stories To Shake Your Bones when I came across a story titled “Interruption Of The Mummy’s Eternal Rest.” I figured it would be a typical mummy story of the era, involving archeologists getting trapped inside a pyramid or unleashing a curse by opening a sarcophagus in an English museum, but I was shocked to find it was actually much more unique in it’s approach to ancient Egyptian horror.
It is one of the only stories I’ve come across to focus on a classical monster experiencing horror instead of dishing it out, but more interesting than that is how timely the story still feels. I couldn’t believe how much the core premise of the main scare easily transplants to the modern age, to the point that I believe the comic would have been right at home on the sales rack as recently as 2017.
