After their drummer was arrested on child pornography charges, Canadian band New Pornographers has changed their name to Lady Antebellum.
Singer Niko Case explained, “After the dismissal of our former drummer because of child pornography charges, we felt that it was time to change the band’s name to something not controversial in the least. It’s time for a new beginning.”
Case continued, “As keyboardist Kathryn Calder and I are two female members of the band, we thought we would share our mutual love for the antebellum architecture style that was popular during the mid eighteen hundreds. Personally, I’m fond of the grand scale of antebellum architecture and it’s Greek Revival and Neo-Classical influences. Kathryn has always been a fan of it’s signature large wrap around porches, central entrances, and grand staircases.”
When explained that Lady Antebellum was previously the band name for country group Lady A, and that they changed their name because of association with slavery in the antebellum South, Case muted the Zoom interview.
After a five minute pause, Case returned, saying, “My deepest apologies. I was not aware of the connection between antebellum architecture and slavery. That is certainly not the type of image we want to portray. Our new band name will now be Canadian Band. Also, I’ve never even heard of the group Lady A. Must be an American thing.”
“While we’re talking, I have some exciting news to share,” Case said. “We have a new album coming out later this year. I’m so proud of it – it’s some of the finest work we’ve ever done as a group. And it’s being produced by a true music legend – Diddy.”
When explained that Diddy was facing dozens of lawsuits for charges including racketeering and sex trafficking, Case said, “Shit,” and disconnected the Zoom call.
