There’s nothing better than watching fringe presidential candidates implode on the way to their ultimate demise. Today was that day for 2016 hopeful Mike Huckabee.
Huckabee, who has already proven that he has what it takes to lose a presidential nomination race, recently spoke at the 2015 National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville, Tennessee and during his speech, tried to make the point that transgendered people are going to ruin the world by showing up in public bathrooms to frighten children and annihilate their fragile minds. Lucky for us, the video of this speech surfaced and spread like wildfire. It includes gems like this:
“I wish someone would have told me when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE,” Huckabee said. “I’m pretty sure I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.'”
Personally, I don’t foresee Caitlyn Jenner running into a bathroom with her male genitalia out, waving it around for all of the children to see. But hey, not all of us have the insight that Mike Huckabee has. That’s why he’s the one running for president, I guess.
Predictably, and rightfully so, millions of people have ripped Huckabee to shreds while others have soaked in the comforting backlash these comments have received like they were taking in the simple pleasure of watching a summer thunderstorm on their porch. Watching politicians self-mutilate their chances is a vaunted American tradition, and it’s important to cherish the moments when they present themselves to us. I would say that Republicans need to run as far away as possible from guys like Huckabee and find candidates with sane agendas (something I’ve talked about before), but I don’t sense that being as much fun for any of us.
I admit that I was way off; as it turns out, Huckabee might be an even better heel in the 2016 presidential race than Chris Christie. Let’s keep giving this guy an audience!
