When it comes to pranks in sports, baseball is the undeniable king. And minor league baseball, as a whole, really prides itself on being the carefree, happy-go-lucky little brother of the major leagues, which likes to take itself a little more seriously.
The latest evidence comes from the El Paso Chihuahuas, the San Diego Padres’ Triple-A affiliate. For a month, the team convinced Jeff Francoeur that teammate Jorge Reyes was deaf and Francoeur continued to fall for it, despite mounting evidence that Reyes could hear (which is the best part of this whole thing).
Reyes stayed committed to the bit, even as its structure grew to be more complex. For that alone, he deserves a promotion to the majors, even with an ERA over five.
